Any ideas on a really cheap home theater system?

My dad can’t hear our tv very well and he turns it up so load that he’s making my mom deaf as well. So for a birthday present, we want to get him some kind of theater system so that we can put the speakers next to his chair so that he won’t have to turn it up so load. We’ve looked around and the ones we have seen that feed audio from the tv are all over $150. We would like to pay under $100. We don’t need anything fancy or even home theater like at all. All that we really need is the speakers.

A simple, cheap home theater setup?

I’m still in high school. I’m thinking it’d be pretty awesome to watch movies with my friends outside, at night. We have a backyard that would be perfect for a viewing area. My thought is, how about using a laptop to play DVD’s, a few computer speakers for audio, a projector, and a bedsheet I can hang up for a screen. Is this too simplistic? Will it work? And what is a good, quality projector I can buy that won’t tear a hole though my wallet?
